Counselling can address many issues, including one or more of
the following:-
· Grief or loss of a loved one
· Difficulties at work
· Conflict
· Anxiety and depression
· Self esteem
· Relationship & family problems
· Parenting
How do counsellors differ from psychiatrists and
psychologists?
Psychiatrists are doctors who specialise in disorders and diseases
of the mind. Treatment usually includes medication.
Psychologists are university trained and have studied
relationship dynamics, individual behaviour, social groupings and
their functions in society. Psychologists specialize in different
areas and some will carry out educational or personality tests.
Some are also trained in counselling.
Counsellors are trained specifically in personal counselling for
individuals, couples, families and groups. They generally use
treatments and therapies that focus on clients learning to use
their own mental and physical resources more effectively.
How do I choose a counsellor?
It is important to feel comfortable with the counsellor you choose.
You are encouraged to check out whether they have ever dealt
with the issues you feel are troubling you and it is perfectly
acceptable to query their qualifications or membership to a
professional body, (Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association)
fees and cancellation policy. It is good to keep in mind your
budget, travel time and location of the service to ensure you can
commit to regular sessions easily.
