Karen began her counselling career in 1999, counselling clients in crisis for Lifeline. Since then, she has continued her professional development by successfully completing a Graduate Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in counselling and is a Clinical Member of CAPA (counselling and psychotherapists association of Australia), an organization governed by PACFA (psychotherapists and counselling federation of Australia).
Karen was previously employed as a counsellor at South Pacific Private (SPP) – a treatment centre which supports individuals dealing with a wide variety of issues including; drug, alcohol and other addictions, eating disorders, co-dependence and, depression and anxiety. In her role, Karen was part of multi-disciplinary team working with both individuals and groups, supporting them during their stay at SPP.
Karen has an established private practice in the Eastern Suburbs where she works with clients with a range of issues; grief and loss, relationship challenges, life transitions, weight & body image issues, self esteem building & self care. Some of Karen’s work involves seeing clients for a short period of time i.e. 6-8 weeks or for much longer periods, i.e. 2-5 years.
Karen’s interest in counselling came about as she sought to improve her own life whilst also wanting to find a way to support others during difficult times. Karen has overcome many personal challenges with the knowledge she has gained through her extensive training, and has also sought counselling for herself to help her through difficult times. She is passionate about others seeking the support they need, rather than trying to ‘go it alone’. Karen’s love of children and family has led her to work with families of children with special needs. She is passionate about how each person in the family has an impact on the others and has a particular interest in supporting mothers in their own self care, given the unique challenges they face.
